  5. 6. This one stumbles a bit while it s still really good, nicely spooky and heart wrenching, it leaves something to be desired at the end She never really says whether Ringan is freed of his connection to the story of his ancestors or not, especially since there is no real exorcism that takes place The bit with the baby was rather confusing as well up til the very end, the clues in the text lead one to believe Margaret was pregnant when she was put upon the Isle of Dogs and torn apart by hounds and [...]

  7. Another in the Haunted Ballad series Deborah Grabien uses English ballads as a framework for folksinger Ringan Laine and his S.O Penny to be visited by the spirits of those inspiring the ballads The series is a mixture of ghost story, time travel, mystery and historical fiction I read some of them and enjoyed them years ago Now I am going back and reading the entire series because of my enjoyment of her JP Kinkaid series It is rather embarrassing to admit that I do not recall which ones that I h [...]

  8. Didn t creep me out the way Matty Groves did, but still very good Wonderful period detail and I just adore Penny and Ringan, have since the first book I hope it doesn t sound horrible of me to say, but it was nice to have the shoe on the other foot when it came to who the spirits were targeting, because now Penny and Ringan know what it has been like for each other in the previous experiences and can understand themselves better in that sense. My first book of the year finished Week one down, fif [...]

Fourth in a series Folk musician and old house restorer Ringan Laine and his partner Penny, who heads a theatre company, keep coming across ghosts whose stories are connected with old ballads They can t get rid of the ghosts until they find the nugget of truth at the heart of the ballad In this book, Ringan does than see and hear ghosts, with quite terrifying results Excellent book especially for folk music aficionados.

  10. so far, my least favorite in this series Grabien is a tight, clean writer, and this is something i ve always appreciated about her writing except she seems to have kept this one shorter than necessary and the ending feels, well, incomplete i highly recommend the rest of the series, and would classify her novel Plainsong as a must read.

  11. A very interesting addition to the series Of course I had to look up the Pentangle version of the title song on You Tube or go nuts trying to remember the melody I do wish I had been able to find these in order but the brief mentions of previous stories shouldn t spoil them for me when I do find them.

  12. I actually was able to locate the old English folk song this book is based on Lots of Tudor period history made this a fascinating page turner Pretty good for a ghost story.

  13. Ringan and Penny are involved with the ghosts from Henry VIII s court Ringan s ancestor Ringan is propelled backward in time Very good.
