  2. J.W Jackson is a former, slightly disabled cop who now lives in Martha s Vineyard A fishing boat explodes and the sister of J.W s family friends believe it wasn t an accident Out of the business for a while J.W promises Susie he will do some digging This is the first Martha s Vineyard Mystery Introducing Jeff Jackson and I really enjoy it I love J.W s character and his developing romance with Zee It really makes me want to vacation there

  3. I m a Cape Cod gal in part , so this series is making me very nostalgic Like Tapply s Brady Coyne, Jackson spends a lot of time fishing and drinking beer, so kick back in your lawn chair with a growler Lots of fun and well plotted.

  4. This is the first book in the Martha s Vineyard s Mystery series by Philip R Craig I discovered this series at my local library and although I m not very familiar with Martha s Vineyard itself, I love reading about my home state of Massachusetts This story was darker than I expected, but still very readable It had a bit of a Spenser vibe to it, if Spenser had retired to Martha s Vineyard to fish Perhaps it s just the Massachusetts connectionIn any case, I liked the characters and I enjoyed the s [...]

  5. A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO DIE Unl Inv J.W Jackson Martha s Vineyard, MA Cont GCraig, Philip R 1st in seriesFrom Fantastic Fiction During his career as a Boston cop, Jeff J W Jackson saw enough of the evil that men do to last a lifetime So he retired to the serenity of Martha s Vineyard to spend his days fishing for blues and wooing a sexy nurse named Zee But when a local s boat mysteriously explodes off the coast, killing an amiable young drifter, Jackson finds himself reluctantly drawn back into the [...]

  6. Nice light cozy featuring an ex cop who becomes involved in a drug related murder on Martha s Vineyard He and his nurse girlfriend track down a killer, then become the prey when the killer turns on them I like the simple writing style It s straightforward and relaxed, with some light humor J.W is an avid fisherman, so there s a lot of talk about that, especially when he meets his girlfriend at the beach as she tries to learn how to cast I will definitely continue with this series.

  7. The guy made a living writing and living on Martha s Vinyard And he can cook And shoot And he marries the girl of his dreams And she can shoot And they raise kids I love the Vinyard.

  8. The first book in a murder mystery series set on Martha s Vineyard, MA Martha s Vineyard is one of my favorite places The descriptions in the story were enough to take me back and I could visualize the locations where the action transpired The main character, JW Jackson, was formerly a Boston MA cop who, after having been shot, was no longer able to do that job Instead he s a fisherman But he just can t let go of investigating and after he witnesses a boat explode, he s driven to solve the case [...]

  9. I really enjoyed this book It was my second in the series, having recently stumbled upon book 14 in my stash, and devouring it in a day J.W Jackson is my kind of guy Any many who surf casts, cooks, and grows his own food can put his slippers next to my bed any time I enjoyed story, characters, and the wonderful sense of place The remaining books in the series are on order from Can t wait

  10. Wasn t sure if I was going to enjoy this beginning of a new series, but I did Lots of references to fishing that didn t interest me, but the main character was solid and it offered a great mystery Will continue with this series.

  11. I ll admit, I wasn t expecting much from this book, but was pleasantly surprised The protagonist is funny and the story hel my attention Looking forward to

  12. A Beautiful Place to Die by Philip R Craig is the first book of the Martha s Vineyard Mystery series set on late 20th century Martha s Vineyard Protagonist J.W Jackson retired from Boston police force after a shooting left a bullet embedded near his spine He spends his days enjoying the natural beauty of the island and fishing for bluefish He goes out early to catch the first fish in the first run of the season, so he can say You re just in time for the funeral when other fishermen arrive too la [...]

  13. I enjoyed reading this novel, finding it engaging and very clearly written I thought the setting on Martha s Vineyard was colorful and fascinating and did not mind the many details about fishing or food including a recipe I would have preferred a interesting and complex plot with a greater focus on mystery rather than romance Some leeway should be given, however, since this is the first book in a series and the author obviously had to establish the setting and introduce the characters while sti [...]

  14. An easy, unchallenging read, this is a crime story set on Martha s Vineyard, with was lots of the island, its fish and its people, and not much mystery I felt that the author was writing a paean to his idyllic lifestyle, and inserted a mystery to make it a book Anyway, the mystery involves a boat which explodes off the coast of the Vineyard, an apparent accident, killing one person and injuring another JW Jackson, a retired policeman, is asked to investigate by the sister of the injured man, as [...]

  15. 1 in the Martha s Vineyard Mystery series J.W Jackson is an ex Boston cop, retired after being wounded He now lives a semi subsistence living on the Vineyard in a home that belonged to his father He acts as caretaker for seasonal dwellers, fishes, clams, and solves the occasional murder.During his career as a cop on the back streets of Boston, Jeff Jackson saw enough of the evil that men do to last a lifetime So he retired to the serenity of Martha s Vineyard, to spend his days fishing for blues [...]

  16. BOTTOM LINE 1 J.W Jackson, ex cop, Martha s Vineyard When a nice young man dies in a boat explosion, a friend asks Jackson to look into it and clear up a few loose ends A satisfying first novel not quite cosy, not quite PI, but a comfortable blend, with gentle humor The mildly reclusive Jackson seems to live for the outdoors and good food, fishing and beers with friends, and comes across as a thoroughly good guy And a pretty darn good sleuth too even though the premise is a mite flimsy and he ma [...]

  17. I ve heard good things about this author, but this first entry in the series is a little standard Fans of the mystery genre will see all the standard tropes ex cop who gets dragged into investigating a crime by some pretty young girl, the disgtraught girlfriend eagerly awaiting her beau as the ship pulls into harbor BEFORE IT EXPLODES , etc Plot twists can be seen fairly easily and there are some huge gaps in deductive reasoning that completely escape the author For example, the main character d [...]

  18. My husband and I read this as a compromise, as it was recommended to us as a mystery romance with exciting action but no gruesome or gory murder scenes We both really enjoyed it The book starts out a bit slow, but really ropes you in once the clues start falling into place Set in Martha s Vineyard, a favorite vacation spot of ours, it is also full of beautiful descriptions of the landscapes, anecdotes about fishing, and mouth watering recipes One warning it left my husband mooning over the idea [...]

  20. I love mysteries, not the bloody, gory, scary kind the knotted, smart ass, funny kind mostly I love them in a series if I like the main character you have to like someone if you are going to hang around them for a couple of hours I really liked this first book in the series He is funny, smart ass and the story was pretty good, if a bit too convoluted for the denouement That can be forgiven up to a point Now on to the next one I am only worried that the series takes place on Martha s Vineyard and [...]

  22. This book follows retired Boston Cop Jeff Jackson, commonly known as J.W When a local ship blows up he is contacted by the sister of the owner to investigate to find out what happened Turns out the case involved illegitimate children, drugs etc Jeff has his hands full as he becomes the target of an angry drug addicted kid Jeff also bonds with a nurse named Zee, they seem to be bonding very well in this budding friendship romance. This is a cute book that is full of mystery, action, catching fish [...]

  23. Light mystery set in Martha s Vineyard 1st in the series Jeff Jackson, the protag, is an ex cop of disability living on the Vineyard He s a good cook, a bit curmudgeonly, and falling for a local nurse It s surprising to find out near the end of the book that he s only in his 30she seemed much older to me The rest of the characters are not much developed The mystery involving a long lost son, drugs, a lecherous older woman, and a boat explosion, was very flat The author didn t do a very good job [...]

  24. The first of the Martha s Vineyard series I met the main character, J.W Jackson, through William G Tappley s Brady Coyne series He s a retired Boston cop who retired early and moved to Martha s Vineyard In this first volume besides solving a complicated crime and getting hit with shotgun pellets, he also meets the young nurse who will become his wife in the future Well designed and written.

  25. I ve never been to Martha s Vineyard and unlikely to do so Visiting with retired cop Jeff Jackson and his newfound love Zee is a pleasant trip, one I plan to immediately repeat This first in the series is a tolerable mystery drugs, an exploded boat meaning murder, an old high school ring that bears a secret , but it s the landscape and Jeff s food that really drew me in.

  26. This series was recommended to me by a patron who knows I love mysteries The author died in 2007 but this is the beginning of quite a large series Some of the dialogue was Sam Spade ish but was still enjoyable and a quick read I ll continue this series since I m always on the lookout for new to me mystery writers.

  28. The author wrote a great sense of place and I felt like I was there in the story However, I found the story not to my liking, the characters were interesting enough, but the writing was clunky Ultimately I did not wish to continue on with my reading. However, if you enjoy island settings, fishing and a sleuth who knows what he is doing, this is probably a good book to pick up.

  29. Found at used bookstore This is the first book in the series of Martha Vineyard mysteries I have read later books and enjoyed meeting J.W as he investigates a boat explosion In the process he meets Zee who plays a major role in his life and later books

  30. Excellent Continuing character J.W Jackson first in series former Boston cop now living in Martha s Vineyard is asked to investigate strange happenings related to a boat that exploded and drug running on the island.
